The River Dell Golden Hawks JV Football Team started strong and maintained their momentum, securing a commanding 42-0 win over Morris Hills at River Dell High School.
River Dell wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with their first offensive possession. Quarterback Brooks Esler completed a 12-yard pass to Connor Gastman for the opening touchdown. They opted for a two-point conversion, which was successful as Esler found Gastman again, making the score 8-0.
After the Golden Hawks' defense forced Morris Hills into a three-and-out, River Dell quickly found the end zone once more. Andrew Kelm scored on a jet sweep, sprinting in for a 12-yard touchdown that extended their lead to 14-0.
River Dell's defense made a significant impact when Morris Hills' quarterback fumbled the snap, allowing Mikey Koth to scoop up the loose ball and rumble into the end zone for a touchdown. This jubilant celebration increased the Golden Hawks' lead to 21-0.
Morris Hills attempted to regain momentum by going for it on fourth down deep in their own territory, but Jayden Rodriguez stuffed the run, resulting in a turnover on downs.
With a short field to work with, River Dell's offense made quick progress on the ground, aided by the offensive line's solid blocks. Running back Teddy Schwanewede capped off the drive with a five-yard touchdown, expanding the margin to 28-0.
The Golden Hawks' defense continued to shine, ending the first half with a combined sack of the Knights' quarterback by Mike Koth and Weston Herbert.
In the third quarter, River Dell quickly boosted their lead further as Andrew Kelm took a pitch from Esler, spun around, and sprinted to the end zone for a spectacular 48-yard touchdown.
Punt returner Mark Spano put the finishing touch on the lopsided victory with a spectacular punt return. He fielded the punt near midfield, maneuvered through a crowd of players, and broke free to score.
River Dell will return to the gridiron on Monday, October 6th, facing Bergenfield at Bergenfield High School, with kickoff set for 4:15 p.m.
