The River Dell Golden Hawks Varsity Football Team extended its winning streak to three games with a commanding 48-6 victory over the Morris Hills Knights at River Dell High School in Oradell, New Jersey. With this win, River Dell improved its record to 3-2, while Morris Hills fell to 1-4.
The Golden Hawks started strong, thanks to an impressive kickoff return by Cain Lanza, which set up their offense at the Morris Hills 34-yard line. Quarterback Zion Yoon quickly advanced the ball into the Knights' territory, capping off the drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mike DeGroat.
River Dell's defense made an immediate impact on Morris Hills' first offensive possession when defensive back Luke Van Dam recovered a fumble by the Knights' quarterback.
In just one play, the Golden Hawks found the end zone again. Zion Yoon threw a screen pass to Cain Lanza, who sprinted 19 yards for a touchdown, extending River Dell's lead to 14-0.
With four and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter, River Dell regained possession and swiftly increased their lead. Cain Lanza broke free for a 25-yard run and then capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 21-0.
The Golden Hawks kept the momentum going when punt returner Zion Yoon fielded a punt and skillfully returned it to the Morris 31-yard line. He then connected once again with Cain Lanza on a screen pass, bringing the ball down to the Knights' 4-yard line. On the next play, Yoon ran into the end zone for a touchdown, boosting River Dell's lead to 27-0 by the end of the first quarter.
To start the second quarter, River Dell executed a pooch kick that Dominic DeMarco successfully recovered. Wasting little time, Zion Yoon threw a pass to wide receiver Nick Cordts, who raced into the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown, increasing the score to 34-0.
River Dell's defense continued to apply pressure, as Luke Van Dam recorded his second sack of the game, forcing Morris Hills to go three-and-out. The Golden Hawks' offense swiftly moved into the Knights' territory by mixing runs and passes. On first and goal at the 6-yard line, Cain Lanza took a handoff and skillfully maneuvered around the left side into the end zone for another score.
For the extra point, River Dell opted for a spread formation, allowing Jayden Kim to dive straight ahead for a two-point conversion, bringing the score to 42-0 at halftime.
Morris Hills managed to spoil River Dell's shutout bid early in the fourth quarter with a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tyler Pfarrer to end Hunter Tempesta tight.
However, River Dell quickly responded with a highlight play as backup quarterback Brooks Esler launched a 57-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Dan Lee, sealing the Golden Hawks' convincing victory.
Looking ahead, River Dell aims to continue its winning streak by hosting Bergenfield (1-4) on Friday, October 3rd, at River Dell High School, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
