The River Dell Golden Hawks Freshman Football Team (4-0) continued their impressive performance with a decisive 25-0 victory over the Parsippany Hills Vikings at River Dell High School in Oradell, New Jersey.
River Dell received the opening kickoff, and a fantastic return by Jaeden Raguindin to the 40-yard line set the stage for their offense.
The Golden Hawks' running game was strong as quarterback Mark Spano took the snap in shotgun formation. He faked a handoff, darted to the right side of the field, skillfully avoided going out of bounds, cut back to the middle, and sprinted deep into Parsippany Hills territory.
On a crucial third-and-goal situation at the two-yard line, Spano threw a pass to Jake Van Wettering, who found himself uncovered and strolled into the end zone for the touchdown.
The Golden Hawks' defense quickly forced the Vikings' offense into a three-and-out. Mark Spano continued to shine with his running ability. Once again lined up in shotgun formation, he dropped back in the pocket, but when he couldn't find an open receiver, Spano stepped up, juked a couple of defenders, and made a dash down the left side of the field for a remarkable 41-yard gain to the Parsippany Hills 33-yard line.
Chris Barone then took over as quarterback and made an immediate impact. After receiving the snap, Barone scrambled out of the pocket and lofted a pass to Jake Van Wettering, who faked out several defenders and scampered into the end zone for a score, extending River Dell's lead to 13-0.
In the third quarter, the Golden Hawks' defense provided excellent field position for the offense, highlighted by Eli Gonzalez's interception, which he returned to the Vikings' one-yard line.
On second-and-goal at the two-yard line, Mark Spano took the snap, faked the handoff, and trotted into the end zone for another touchdown, widening River Dell's lead to 19-0.
The secondary continued to dominate, with Gabe Maya intercepting a pass and returning it to the 45-yard line late in the third quarter.
River Dell's offense controlled the line of scrimmage, allowing Jaeden Raguindin to take a handoff, turn the corner on the left side, and accelerate past several defenders for a 39-yard gain.
On first-and-ten at the Parsippany Hills 23-yard line, Chris Barone took the snap in shotgun formation, stepped up in the pocket, and lofted a pass to wide receiver Chris Nader. Nader made a spectacular catch despite being double-teamed, spun around, and raced into the end zone, expanding the Golden Hawks' lead to 25-0.
Chris Barone capped off River Dell's formidable defensive effort by intercepting a pass from a Vikings receiver as time wound down in the fourth quarter.
The Golden Hawks will return to the field on Saturday, September 27th, hosting Pequannock Township with kickoff scheduled for 9 a.m. at River Dell High School.
